St Mark’s Church, Woodcote, Purley, Surrey

PIERRA were deployed as the specialist Principal Contractor for the conservation masonry and roof repair works to this substantial Grade II listed church which dates back to 1909, working alongside one of the most revered Architect practices within the industry.

The roof repairs were concentrated to the south side of the church where the existing concrete tiles to the south aisle, choir vestry and organ loft were replaced with new handmade clay tiles, the existing perished lead-work replaced with new along with associated timber repairs to the roof structure.

On the masonry side all of the Kittenish Rag-stone and Bath stone facades to the church were repointed with new lime based mortar replacing the cement based over-pointing with the conservation of the Bath stone dressings being conserved with a combination of sensitive and appropriate lime based mortar repairs, stone indents and replacements.To the Kittenish Rag-stone walling all loose and friable stone was carefully removed by hand with new blocks inserted in place of the severely deteriorated.
